How to stay safe while waiting for a tow truck

15 Jan 2025

Waiting for a tow truck can feel stressful, especially if you are on a busy road or it is dark. A few simple steps can keep you safe while help is on the way.

Stay visible

Turn on hazard lights as soon as you stop. At night, keep interior lights on and use a torch if you need to step outside. Avoid standing behind the vehicle.

Pick a safe position

If it is safe, move the vehicle to the shoulder or a nearby driveway. If you cannot move, stay inside with your seatbelt on. Avoid standing in traffic lanes or close to fast-moving vehicles.

Keep your phone handy

Your tow operator may call to confirm your location or give an updated ETA. Keep your phone charged and stay alert to incoming calls.

Watch for hazards

If you notice leaking fuel, smoke, or other hazards, move away from the vehicle and let the tow operator know. Share any risks when you call.

Keep kids and pets safe

Keep children inside the vehicle with seatbelts on. Pets should stay secured or inside the vehicle to avoid sudden movements near traffic.
