Accident towing: what happens next (insurance + police)

07 Jan 2025

An accident is stressful, especially when you are dealing with police, insurers, and a damaged vehicle. Knowing what happens next can reduce the pressure and help you make good decisions.

First priority: safety

Move to a safe area if you can. Check for injuries and call emergency services if needed. If police attend the scene, follow their instructions before any towing takes place.

Insurance and documentation

If you are insured, contact your provider as soon as practical. They will ask for your policy number, location, and a brief summary of the incident. If police are involved, they may provide a report number.

How accident towing works

A recovery operator will arrive with the right equipment to secure the vehicle. This can include winching, skid recovery, or flatbed loading depending on damage or location.

What to expect at pickup

  • The operator will check the scene for hazards
  • The vehicle will be secured to prevent further damage
  • You can choose a repairer or storage destination

Working with police and insurers

Waipa Towing & Salvage is NZ Police approved and works with major insurers across Waikato. That means we can coordinate the recovery and help with the paperwork after the tow.

After the tow

Once the vehicle is delivered, you will receive confirmation of where it has been taken. If you need a quote for transport or storage, you can request it when you book the tow.

If you have questions after an accident, call our team any time for clear guidance and next steps.
